We've done our best to answer some of the questions that you may have about Spotlight Academy but if you have a question that isn't here, please feel free to contact us by email firstname.lastname@example.org or call on 07801 659540.
Are teachers DBS checked?
All supervising teachers are DBS checked which is available to see upon request.
How do I pay for lessons?
Lessons are payable on a monthly basis in advance via an online payment system. As our costs are fixed, fees remain payable in cases of absence. There are no reductions for sickness or holidays. Children will not be taught if lessons haven't been paid for.
Will I have to buy special clothes or shoes?
New pupils may attend wearing simply leggings or tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt or sweatshirt. Hair should always be tied back. Pumps or trainers can be worn until you are ready to buy dancing shoes.
Once your child has settled in, the school uniform should be worn to all lessons: Pink leotard, black stirrup lycra leggings, school T-shirt, sweatshirt, cardigan or hoodie, low heeled black tap shoes, black jazz shoes and pink satin ballet shoes. All dance clothing and shoes can be purchased through the school at discounted prices.
What type of dancing is covered?
Ballet, tap, modern and street are taught. Ballet provides the foundation for all other subjects. It requires discipline and helps pupils with their self-confidence, posture, balance and co-ordination. Tap is energetic, lively and great fun. It helps children develop a sense of rhythm and co-ordination. Modern as the name suggests embraces dance steps that are current at the time. This could include anything that you might see from the 70s, 80s, and 90s right up to the current hip hop style seen in pop videos.
What other subjects are available?
Performing Arts (drama, singing and dance) is taught on Friday evening in Uttoxeter.
Can I stay with my child in the class?
Parents are welcome to wait in the reception area but will not be allowed into the room once the class has started. We ask that parents respect this as it can be very distracting to other pupils.
What about taking exams and participating in shows?
There will be opportunities for all children to take IDTA exams – these are usually on an annual basis. International Dance Teachers Association is recognised by the Stage Dance Council along with only a handful of other organisations including RAD. We try to make exams as stress free as possible and will only enter children if they are comfortable with what they have to do. There is never any pressure placed on pupils to take exams although they are a great achievement and one that students should be proud of.
Spotlight Academy also stages productions every 18 months at local theatres. This is a great experience for both the pupils on the stage and parents/family in the audience.
Does the school stay open during the holidays?
The school shuts for two weeks over Christmas, Easter weekend and five to six weeks in the summer holidays. In the event of bad weather or closure due to unforseen circumstances, appropriate deductions will be made from the following month's bill. The general rule of thumb regarding bad weather is that if the teachers are able to attend, then lessons will take place.
What if my child has special medical requirements?
It's not uncommon that children may have special medical requirements and we are happy to discuss with parents how individual needs can be met.
My child has no dancing experience, does that matter?
We cater for all children whether they are beginners or more experienced … the emphasis is on fun!
